Can AI really do astrology?

Today, astrology enthusiasts have a lot of options. They can:
| See a professional astrologer (i.e. a human) | Pricy over time, so most people save live readings for special occasions & life pivots |
|---|---|
| Study astrology | Books, blogs, podcasts & classes require investment - and not everyone has the time (or desire) |
| Use astrology apps | These are easy, fun, and typically accurate - but they aren’t hyper-personalized (so most don’t go deep) |
| Use an AI astrologer | Ranges from basic AI platforms (like ChatGPT, Claude) to custom apps (like Star Path) - and accuracy varies wildly. |
Because AI astrology is instant, cheap (relative to a live reading), and deeply personalized, more and more people are using it - often alongside their “special occasion” readings and traditional astrology apps like Chani or The Pattern.
But there’s a BIG caveat:
AI is a pattern matcher: it responds to the data it’s given.
So without the right data (and instructions), it tends to get things wrong (and is great at enthusiastically convincing you that it’s right).
As a trained astrologer & the creator of an AI chat platform that’s actually built on astrology, I’ve seen the best (and the worst) of what AI can do with a birth chart. So in this article, we’ll dive into what people actually do with astrology - and how AI chat platforms can (or can’t) help.
We’ll cover:
- How people want to use AI + astrology (and why they’re running into issues)
- What to look out for when using general AIs (like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity & Grok) for astrology
- How to make AI work well for astrology
The 6 ways people want to use AI for astrology
AI can be a great way to use astrology - because your birth chart is basically just data, and AI is a phenomenal data analyst. But to use it effectively, you have to start with accurate data & solid instructions - otherwise you might end up with a tattoo of the wrong zodiac sign (true story).
Here’s what we see people trying to do with AI + astrology today:
- Get a basic astrology reading (i.e. The Birth Chart)
- Make a timing decision (i.e. Transits)
- Improve their relationships (i.e. Synastry)
- Decide where to travel or live (i.e. Astrocartography)
- Get emotional support (often during a “why is this happening” astrology moment)
- Strategize next steps (turning insight into action)
I’ll walk you through how each of these really works - and where people run into issues using AI as their astrologer.
#1 - Get a basic astrology reading: AI for birth charts
People use AI because it’s easy. You ask a question, and you get an answer. So naturally, we want to do that with astrology (because while astrology is quite complex, any seasoned astrologer can make your life suddenly “make sense” in the span of an hour…but you don’t have access to them 24/7).
But the heart of any astrology reading is your birth chart - and this is where most AI’s break down…because birth charts must be calculated by an ephemeris.
Think: NASA-grade planetary placements at any given moment in time (plus a lot of complex math that changes depending on what house system you use).
Here’s how AI should answer an astrology question:
- Step 1: Pick a house system.
- Step 2: Pull accurate birth chart data from an ephemeris
- Step 3: Respond to the query based on detailed instructions about how to behave as an astrologer.
Simple, right?
Here’s where most AI’s go wrong:
| How people try to get birth chart readings from AI | Where it goes wrong |
|---|---|
| Paste a birth time into ChatGPT or Claude and ask it to create a birth chart | No ephemeris: General AI platforms can’t create birth charts |
| Paste a list of birth data (e.g. “Sun in Gemini in the 6th house”) into a chat | Too much memory: This works for a few messages…but then, the AI starts to hallucinate because it can’t remember the exact birth data as a conversation gets longer |
| Upload a picture of their birth chart, and ask the AI to analyze it | Heavy data extraction: A birth chart contains dozens (or more) data points. To properly extract birth data from an image, AI platforms have to look all of them up - and when it can’t quickly find something in its training data or web search, it will hallucinate. This is the fastest way to get a bad astrology reading from AI. |
| Ask a question about their birth chart | Insufficient instructions: While AI platforms like Perplexity & Claude have astrology in their training data, they don’t have specific instructions around how to behave as an astrologer - which means they miss steps in the analysis. |
The only way to get around this is to build a custom GPT (we’ll cover this later) that references your source birth chart data with every message. But it’s still clunky, even if you build something custom with an API that points to an ephemeris - because you can’t layer in complex, multi-layer tooling.
Because, as it turns out, people don’t ask AI simple questions.
They ask things like:
- Why am I so unhappy in my career right now? → requires a birth chart reading & a transits lookup
- I keep fighting about money with my spouse. Why are we getting so triggered? → requires multiple chart readings & synastry
- And so on.
So because people talk with AI organically - like they would with a friend (think, layers upon layers of context) - what AI actually needs to do is never as simple as a “basic astrology reading”.
#2 - Make a timing decision: AI for transits
The same applies to transits: to use AI effectively, you need source data from an ephemeris. But now, there are 3 layers:
- Your birth chart
- Your current transits
- The aspects between them
Here’s how AI should answer a transits question:
- Step 1: Pick a house system.
- Step 2: Pull accurate birth chart data from an ephemeris
- Step 3: Pull transits relevant to the query - inferring the right date range & which planets are even applicable (and for accuracy, you need hard-coded reference tables).
- Step 4: Create a bi-wheel & calculate aspects between the transits chart & the natal chart.
- Step 5: Respond to the query based on detailed instructions about how to behave as an astrologer and how to analyze transits.
This time…it’s a little less simple.
Here’s where most AI’s go wrong:
| How people try to do transits with AI | Where it goes wrong |
|---|---|
| Ask about current transits (in general) | Web search: Instead of looking up transits from an ephemeris, general AI platforms (like Grok, or Claude) do a web search to find articles listing dates - leading to inaccurate, incomplete data. |
| Ask about what transits are currently affecting them | No ephemeris or bi-wheel: Most AI chat platforms can’t actually create the 2 charts required to run a transits analysis (but Star Path can 😉). If you ask ChatGPT about what transits are affecting you - it’ll guess. It’ll use a web search to try to figure out current transits…but it can’t actually run the math required to see how those transits aspect your chart. Why? It literally doesn’t have access to the degrees of the planets, and the formulas required to calculate something like a sextile. Even if it did, asking AI to do this 20+ times to answer a single question (instead of just providing it with the right source data via software tooling), is a recipe for inaccuracy. |
| Ask about the future | Lack of transits software tooling: When people ask timing questions, they want AI to ‘scan’ all possible dates in a range. This requires software that can manually “spin” an ephemeris like a human would (i.e. scroll different dates to see what’s most favorable). General AI platforms simply can’t do this; you need a software wrapper around the AI to pull the data first. |
The rabbit hole goes deep. And while a seasoned developer could potentially build a custom GPT that points an API to an ephemeris to “spin the transit bi-wheel”, this level of analysis is completely inaccessible to anyone who doesn’t have mad coding + astrology skills :)
#3 - Improve your relationships: AI for synastry
Synastry is the astrology of relationships - i.e. how 2 different charts “aspect” each other. Just like transits, using AI for synastry requires 3 layers of source data from an ephemeris:
- Your birth chart
- Another person’s birth chart
- The aspects between them
Here’s how AI should answer a synastry question:
- Step 1: Pick a house system.
- Steps 2 + 3: Pull accurate birth chart data from an ephemeris - twice (once for each person).
- Step 4: Create a bi-wheel & calculate aspects between the 2 charts.
- Step 5: Determine which aspects are relevant to the query (again, for accuracy, you need hard-coded reference tables).
- Step 6: Respond to the query based on detailed instructions about how to behave as an astrologer and how to analyze synastry.
Now we’re up to 6 steps - and without really rigorous instructions, a basic AI chat platform will get this wrong (almost every time).
Here’s where AI runs into challenges with synastry:
| How people try to do synastry with AI | Where it goes wrong |
|---|---|
| Paste in 2 birth charts (or birth times) & ask about their relationship | No ephemeris or bi-wheel: Just like with transits, your average AI chat platform can’t actually create the 2 charts required to run a synastry analysis - nor can it calculate the aspects between them (Star Path can 😉). If you ask ChatGPT about synastry, it’ll 100% hallucinate - because in this scenario, it can’t even use web search (like it does for transits). |
| Paste in synastry data (from an external astrology app with an ephemeris) & ask about their relationship | Too many data inputs: People tend to think that pasting a huge data table into AI means it’ll remember it all. The truth is, the more reference data you give AI, the more likely it is to forget key parts. So even if you manually paste in your synastry, certain parts will get skipped - especially if you haven’t programmed a custom GPT with hierarchical instructions for synastry analysis. |
| Ask follow up questions - in a lengthening chat - about synastry | Old reference data = bad memory: When people ask synastry questions, they typically want to have a whole conversation to unpack “the why”. The problem is…as your chat gets longer, your AI’s memory of that original synastry data declines. In our experience, it takes AI just 3 messages to start forgetting (and hallucinating) astrology data. |
The solution? Store both charts in a software tool, and reference them anew with every question (i.e. inject fresh data). But custom GPTs can’t do this (even when they do reference an ephemeris).
That’s because advanced astrology analyses actually require user input (i.e. “select the 2 charts you want to compare”) - and this simply isn’t possible without a software layer between the user and the AI.
This is what allows people to click buttons, select charts, and select “synastry mode” inside Star Path (it’s the way we ensure that accurate data is used for analysis).
#4 - Decide where to travel or live: AI for Astrocartography
Astrocartography (the astrology of places) layers your birth chart onto a world map. It’s hugely popular in 2026 (and growing), and was Star Path’s top requested feature until we built it in February. It works differently with AI (vs. transits & synastry) because while it requires the same source data, it’s also very visual.
So while it can work beautifully in a chat, astrocartography is the flavor of astrology that benefits most from graphics.
Here’s how AI should answer an astrocartography question:
- Step 1: Pull an astrocartography chart from an ephemeris.
- Step 2: Figure out which planetary lines a specific topic tracks to.
- Step 3: Calculate which cities on Earth land on that line, or within a reasonable range (which needs to be pre-determined using astrocartography best practices).
- Step 4: Respond to the query based on detailed instructions about how to behave as an astrologer and how to analyze astrocartography.
In a perfect world? Your astrology AI should also show you a real, visual map - so you can see how the lines track yourself.
Here’s where AI runs into challenges with astrocartography:
| How people try to do synastry with AI | Where it goes wrong |
|---|---|
| Paste in a birth chart (or birth time) & ask about astrocartography | Wrong chart type + no ephemeris: As with all the other analyses, your average AI chat platform can’t actually create an astrocartography chart (it doesn’t have an ephemeris). But the bigger problem is that ChatGPT (or other chat apps) usually don’t even realize that astrocartography requires a completely different chart - so even if it has your birth data, it can’t map it onto the Earth. |
| Paste in astrocartography data (from an external astrology app with an ephemeris) & ask about places | Too many data inputs, too little analysis: First, we run into the same problem as before: pasting data into AI doesn’t mean it’ll remember it - especially as your chat gets longer. But with astrocartography, there’s another layer: astrocartography (where to live) makes the most sense when considered alongside your birth chart (who you are). By itself, astrocartography will tell you where to live…but it can’t tell you why. For that, you need your birth chart - and multi-layer astrology tools to pull the right data, at the right time, with the right hierarchy of analysis. |
At this point, you probably get the TLDR: most AI chat platforms fall short with classical astrology analysis because they just don’t have a) the source data, b) the tooling, or c) the right instructions.
Now, let’s talk about some less-typical astrology functions: emotional support, and strategy.
#5 - Get emotional support (often during a “why is this happening” astrology moment)
When thinking about how AI works for astrology, it’s important to remember why we turn to astrology in the first place. It’s usually for 2 reasons:
- To understand ourselves better (i.e. personal growth)
- To make sense of - or consciously work with - something happening in our life (whether it’s a challenge, a life transition, or even a big goal).
This is why live, human astrology sessions are so potent: we come to astrology in moments of depth, vulnerability and searching - the very moments we need someone to hold space for us.
But what if that WTF moment is at 10pm?
Or you have a live reading…then have to integrate for a year?
Most people don’t have access to a human astrologer in the charged moments where we most need support - and that’s where AI astrology becomes very attractive.
Here’s where AI gets stuck with emotional support:
| What most AI chat platforms are designed for | What people need for astrology |
|---|---|
| A broad range of needs & preferences | Empathy: A good astrology reading makes you feel seen & honored for who you are - even with challenging placements or life experiences. Most AI chat platforms aren’t designed with empathy as their baseline - because they need to address too many other functions (like coding, and research). |
| Information & analysis | Attunement: The process of personal growth is deep - and confronting our patterns can be triggering. A good astrologer can sense when someone needs to re-regulate, or process - and will step away from information to hold space for that. |
| Neutrality & avoiding feeding delusion | Empowerment: Astrology is filled with difficult placements and transits - and without the right lens, people find it fatalistic. They get stuck in the negative, without seeing their agency (and their free will). A good astrologer shows people how to work with their astrology…not succumb to it. The challenge with AI models is that they must be designed for safety. Some models - especially those from Anthropic (Claude) - go so far in the name of “don’t feed delusions”, they actually come off as harsh. This can be very distressing during an astrology reading - especially one about sensitive placements or life events - so without the right instructions, an AI astrologer can really fail people in their moments of need (or make them feel worse). |
I once asked the Star Path community: “If this product went away tomorrow, what burning need wouldn’t be met in your life?”. Here’s what they said:
- “I wouldn’t have something to turn to in the WTF moments.”
- “How would I make sense of what’s happening to me?”
- “Who would I talk to at 10pm when I’m crying on the floor?”
It’s clear that for most people, AI astrology isn’t just about astrology. It’s also about the emotional support - and co-regulation - we receive in the moments we’re struggling the most (but don’t have access to a human).
#6 - Strategize next steps (turning astrology insight into action)
This one is big. When you pair AI + astrology, you get something that’s never existed in the world of astrology: instant application.
AI chat platforms (like ChatGPT, or Claude) are incredible co-creators. We can use them for tasks, education, and so much more. Pair that with astrology, and you turn insight into action…immediately.
This is extremely powerful - because instant application is something that human astrologers actually can’t do (unless you hire them for non-astrology expertise).
Here are just a few ways people do this with Star Path:
- Create a chart-aligned business plan
- Troubleshoot a fight with their spouse by getting talking points
- Plan a vacation itinerary with astrocartography + a family’s moon signs
- Write emails in their “soul voice”
In my opinion, this is how astrology changes the world. Because insight is great…but action is change-making - and that’s what we need in this next evolution of humanity.
The challenge with most AI chat platforms remains the same:
- Accurate analysis requires accurate data - and ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity lack an ephemeris.
- Basic AI chat tools don’t behave like an astrologer with a strategy toolkit.
- Action plans require specialized astrology software tools - to layer in transits, synastry and astrocartography.
So to sum it up, here are…
5 things to know before using AI for astrology
Before you use a general AI chat platform (like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Grok) for astrology, remember:
- They lack an ephemeris - so they can’t pull accurate astrology chart data on their own.
- They lack specific software tools designed to perform advanced astrology analyses (e.g. transits, synastry & astrocartography)
- By default, AI chat platforms don’t use a structured analytical framework to answer astrology questions (you have to program them yourself).
- General AI platforms aren’t trained to hold space or frame patterns in a balanced way (which is required to give astrology readings with integrity).
- And…a little bonus (we’ll cover this in another article): automatic cross-chat memory can bias an astrology analysis. This creates an echo chamber that can diminish the efficacy of a reading.
In contrast, Star Path is a full-scale AI chat platform built on astrology. It connects an ephemeris + extensive astrology software tooling with AI chat models from multiple providers, with rigorously tested instructions to behave (and analyze) like a professional astrologer.
Our whole system is intentionally designed to address all the AI astrology challenges we’ve covered above - and then some (think: deep-dive reports + classes).

There’s one scenario where general AI platforms (like ChatGPT or Claude) can do astrology well
If you’re a trained astrologer and you understand how to prompt AI cleanly, you can actually get great answers from any AI chat platform. However - getting accurate astrology analysis from a basic AI platform requires you to have a lot of knowledge, and do a lot of manual work using professional-grade astrology software.
You’ll need to:
- Be an advanced astrology student or professional astrologer
- Explain the proper “order of operations” to analyze astrology (this differs for Hellenistic vs. Modern vs. other approaches)
- Prompt AI with exactly the right data - and steps - required for a given astrology analysis
- Know how to discern whether the AI “got it right” or hallucinated
- Know how to correctly pull birth chart, synastry, transits & astrocartography data directly from an ephemeris
- Pull raw data you want analyzed directly from an ephemeris, and include it every time you prompt
- Ask very specific questions that require only one “vector” of analysis
Here’s the rub: even if you have the training to get accurate astrology responses from a basic AI chat platform, you will probably get annoyed (quickly) by the manual labor required to do it.
So…can AI really do astrology?
The short answer is yes: AI can really do astrology…but only if:
- It’s powered by a real ephemeris,
- It has professional-grade, non-AI astrology software tools that for advanced analyses (like transits, synastry and astrocartography),
- It’s rigorously designed to make the AI “think” and hold space like an astrologer.
If you’re a trained astrologer? Have a go with ChatGPT or Claude (as long as you don’t mind the manual data pulls).
If you’re not? Try Star Path. It’s a full-scale AI chat platform built on astrology - with an ephemeris, astrology tooling up the wazoo, and a whole lot of intention.
