The Astrology of Money: How Money Flows Through Your Birth Chart

Money is energy.
It flows in, it flows out, and sometimes it changes forms.
Every entrepreneur knows this. The process of building a business is (quite literally) creating something out of nothing.
An idea becomes a product.
A skill becomes a service.
A conversation becomes a client.
A few words typed into a computer become something people are willing to pay for.
What is that if not energetic?
And in astrology, money has a flow, too.
Most people who start exploring money in their birth chart immediately look to the second house.
And yes: the second house matters. A lot.
But your financial blueprint is much bigger than one house.
Money moves through several different parts of your birth chart — from the way you earn it, to the work you do, to the way you grow, invest, share and eventually build wealth with it.
And understanding that flow can tell you a lot about your relationship with money.
What does astrology say about money?
There isn't one single placement in your birth chart that determines whether you'll be "rich."
Your chart is a blueprint, not a bank statement.
Instead, money astrology looks at several parts of your birth chart to understand things like:
- how you're wired to earn and create resources
- what skills you can turn into value
- your relationship with security and abundance
- the kind of work you may find sustainable or fulfilling
- how money intersects with other people
- how you approach investing, debt and shared resources
- where you may have patterns or beliefs that complicate your relationship with money
That's why I think of money as something that flows through your chart.
And that flow starts with the second house.
Money starts in your second house — but that's not the full story
The second house in astrology rules earned income.
But it also rules values, resources and the skills we build to survive on this planet.
Which is why I think of the second house as the foundation of what I call the career hierarchy of needs.
Because if you can't pay your bills, you probably don't have the luxury of asking whether your work feels deeply meaningful, creatively fulfilling or perfectly aligned with your purpose.
First, we need resources.
Then we have room to ask bigger questions.
Your second house can describe some of the raw material you're working with: the qualities you value, the resources you naturally develop and the ways you may approach creating financial security.
To understand it, we don't just look at the sign on the second-house cusp. We can also look at:
- planets in the second house
- the ruler of the second house
- the sign and house placement of that ruler
- aspects to the ruler
- other placements that support or complicate the story
This is where astrology gets much more interesting than, "You have Aquarius in the second house, so here's how you make money."
Your chart is a system.
We want to understand how the pieces talk to each other.
The 6th and 10th houses tell us more about the work behind the money
Making money and having a career aren't exactly the same thing.
Your second house speaks to income, resources and value.
Your sixth house has more to say about the work itself: your routines, skills, labor and the way you function day-to-day.
Your tenth house speaks to career, public life, achievement, reputation and the larger contribution you're building toward.
Put them together and you can start asking much more useful questions.
Maybe your chart suggests that you're capable of earning money one way...but you'd hate doing it every day.
Maybe you're deeply drawn toward a particular career path, but the business model you're using doesn't adequately support your second-house needs.
Maybe you're trying to build your entire financial life around your tenth house — purpose! impact! calling! — without first creating a stable second-house foundation underneath it.
Your "money blueprint" isn't one placement. It's the relationship between all of these needs.
Your 8th house shows what happens when money gets bigger than you
The second house is often described as my money.
The eighth house introduces our money.
This is the part of the chart associated with shared resources: investments, debt, taxes, inheritances, financial entanglements and the assets we build or manage with other people.
It's also why I say your second house powers your eighth house.
If you don't have money coming in the door, you probably aren't investing it, growing it or preparing it for the next generation.
First we create resources.
Then we can decide what to do with them.
So while the second house can tell us a lot about earning, the eighth house adds another layer to the astrology of wealth: sharing, leveraging, investing and transforming resources over time.
Jupiter, Venus and other planets can add another layer to your money blueprint
Houses tell us where something happens.
Planets tell us more about the forces operating there.
That's why I don't like reducing money astrology to a list of "wealth placements."
There are planets traditionally associated with abundance, attraction or expansion — most notably Venus and Jupiter — but having Jupiter in a particular house doesn't hand you a winning lottery ticket.
And a difficult Saturn placement doesn't doom you to financial struggle.
Instead, we want to ask better questions.
Where does Jupiter encourage expansion — and can that expansion sometimes become excess?
Where does Venus show what you value, enjoy or naturally attract?
Where does Saturn demand patience, responsibility and long-term mastery?
Where does Mars give you the drive to go after something?
Where does Mercury affect the way you think, communicate, sell, negotiate or make decisions?
Once again: it's the system that matters.
Your birth chart can show potential. It can't replace reality.
This is where conversations about astrology and money can go sideways.
A birth chart may show tendencies, strengths, tensions and possibilities.
But it doesn't erase your actual circumstances.
Your access to capital matters.
Your education matters.
The economy matters.
Your industry matters.
Your responsibilities matter.
Your pricing matters.
Your business model matters.
Your decisions matter.
Your birth chart isn't a promise that if you "activate" the correct placement, money will suddenly appear.
I think astrology is much more useful than that.
It gives us another lens through which to understand ourselves — so we can make more intentional choices in the reality we're actually living in.
And sometimes, what we discover isn't a new strategy.
It's a pattern.
What if you understand your money blueprint...but you're still not making the money you want?
This is where things get really interesting.
Let's say you "get" your astro-money blueprint.
You understand your second house.
You know what your tenth house is trying to build.
You've identified some of your natural strengths.
...but you're still not making the salary you want.
Or your business isn't growing.
Or every time you make more money, you somehow find yourself right back where you started.
What do you do?
You look for the blocks in the flow.
Sometimes that's something we can explore symbolically through the birth chart.
Maybe security and expansion seem to pull you in opposite directions.
Maybe being visible brings up an old fear.
Maybe you want more money intellectually, but the behaviors required to create it feel deeply uncomfortable.
And sometimes the "block" isn't astrological at all.
It's a real-world belief, habit, circumstance or decision that needs your attention.
This is an important distinction:
Your birth chart can help you identify a pattern. You still have to work with the pattern in real life.
Your money story isn't the same thing as your money potential
We all have a money story.
It comes from our families.
Our culture.
What we watched our parents do.
What we learned was "responsible," "greedy," "safe," "risky," "possible" or completely out of reach.
Then we carry those stories into our adult financial lives.
We might undercharge because asking for more feels uncomfortable.
We might avoid looking at our numbers because money feels scary.
We might keep choosing security even when we've outgrown it.
Or chase growth so aggressively that we never feel secure at all.
Astrology can give us a language for examining some of those tensions.
But awareness is only step one.
Once you see the pattern, the useful question becomes:
What are you going to do differently?
How to explore your money blueprint in your own birth chart
If you want to use astrology to better understand your relationship with money, don't start by Googling "placements that make you rich."
Start with your actual chart.
Look at your second house first. What sign is there? Are there planets inside it? Where is its planetary ruler, and what is that planet doing?
Then zoom out.
Look at your sixth house and the way you work.
Look at your tenth house and what you're building toward.
Look at your eighth house and your relationship with shared resources, investment, debt and financial interdependence.
Look at Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Mars and Mercury — not as isolated "good" or "bad" money placements, but as characters participating in the larger story.
Then ask yourself:
Where does money seem to flow easily in my life — and where does it consistently get stuck?
That's where the chart becomes useful.
Not as a fortune teller.
As a framework for asking better questions.
