At the start of 2026, there was lots of chatter about numerology:

It's a "1" year!

We're in a brand new era!

Yay for new beginnings!

And to be fair: there was lots of astrology to support this.

However.

For some of you...this year hasn't exactly felt like a sparkly new beginning.

And there's a reason for that:

2026 is a 1 year in numerology. But personally? You might be having a completely different year.

In numerology, we don't just have a collective year number (the underlying current all humans are feeling).

We also have a Personal Year Number, based on your birthday.

Think of it this way:

It's like karaoke night with friends.

Everyone's at the same party — but the songs they sing have a totally different vibe.

That's your Personal Year Number.

You might be in a 1 year (new beginnings).

But you could also be in a 2 (patience & relationships), or a 9 (endings & release).

So if you've spent the last eight months thinking, Um...where exactly is my shiny new beginning?

Your numerology (+ your astrology) might have an answer.

Here's how to layer them together to map the rest of 2026:

How to calculate your Personal Year Number for 2026

Add together:

  • your birth month
  • your birth day
  • the current year

Then, reduce it down to a single digit.

So, for someone born on January 1st:

01/01/2026 → 1 + 1 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 12 → 1 + 2 = 3

This person is in a 3 Personal Year — about creativity, visibility, and connection — layered onto the collective "Year 1 beginnings" energy.

What does your Personal Year Number mean?

Here's the quick version:

  • Personal Year 1: New beginnings, independence, initiative, starting a new cycle
  • Personal Year 2: Patience, relationships, collaboration, sensitivity
  • Personal Year 3: Creativity, communication, visibility, connection

Numerology vs. astrology: What is this year actually about for me?

There are a lot of ways to answer that question.

Numerology gives you one answer.

Astrology gives you others.

There's no "best" way to do it. And you might want to layer them together.

I know I do. Because a year is never about just one thing. There's always relationship stuff, and body stuff, and work stuff.

So we have to work with timing in layers.

For example:

  • Numerology: What's the overarching theme of my year?

  • Annual profections: What area of my life has the microphone this year?

  • Astrology transits: What's being activated, challenged, expanded, or changed right now?

Sometimes they say very different things.

You might be in a numerology year that's screaming GO! EXPAND! TRY THINGS!

...while Saturn is sitting on your relationship planets asking you to get very, very serious about who gets access to you.

But when several different techniques start pointing toward the same theme?

That's when you really pay attention.

How to combine your Personal Year Number with astrology

Here's one way to think about it:

Your Personal Year Number gives you the overarching numerology theme for the year.

Your annual profection shows which area of your birth chart — and therefore which area of life — is especially activated.

And your current astrology transits show what's happening in real time: where you're being pushed, expanded, challenged, released, or changed.

You don't need all three techniques to say exactly the same thing.

Instead, look for the story they tell together.

And ask:

What story do these tell together?

Where are the themes repeating?

Where do they seem to contradict each other?

What's the difference between Whole Sign & Placidus?

There are many house systems in astrology - and each is good at different things. Whole Sign (the OG house system) uses equal house sizes - and gives each a single zodiac sign. Placidus (a "modern" house system from the 1600's) defines house size based on time - giving them different sizes, and potentially multiple zodiac signs. In some ways, Whole Sign is simpler because it lacks interceptions (i.e. signs that are sandwiched in between two other signs, all in a single house), and gives each life area a single guiding theme. But this can also make it a very powerful system when exploring the deepest yearnings of a soul in this lifetime - the core needs & experiences we're here eto have. Placidus, in contrast, has more complex, layered interpretations. In the view of evolutionary astrologers, having multiple signs in a single house can show us how a life area "evolves" over time. This can be useful as we move through life, and step into new versions of who we are (especially with regard to themes like money, or love, or career). The beauty is: you can use Whole Sign & Placidus together. In fact, the Star Path team believes this is the best way to explore personal growth - because switching systems takes us out of a "story", or echo chamber, and invites us to look at ourselves from multiple perspectives. You might find that Whole Sign resonates most with you during one season of life, and Placidus feels "right" 10 years later. Or, you might prefer planning with Placidus, but personal growth with Whole Sign. Our recommendation: explore both. See what lands, leave what doesn't. What house system should I use for my birth chart?

Star Path lets you use either a Whole Sign or Placidus house system - and you should pick the one that resonates most with your life experience. Here are some details to help you choose: Whole Sign is the oldest house system (used by the ancient Greeks). It treats all life areas equally, and gives each a single zodiac sign. For that reason, some people find that it captures the soul's journey in a deeper, more archetypal way. That's why it's our personal favorite at Star Path. Placidus is a "modern" house system (invented in the 1600's). It uses different-sized, time-based houses that contain 1, 2 or more signs. Some people find it to be more accurate, especially for "mundane" matters like planning, because individual charts have more variance (and the interpretation has more layers). The truth is, there's no right or wrong house system when it comes to astrology; there's only the system that feels most true for you. Start with one, explore another, and with time, you might even use both for different aspects of life.
