What's the "right" house system for me to use?

This week, one of you asked a great question in the community forum:

Should I use Whole Sign or Placidus for my birth chart?

Here's how I replied 👇:

(Pro astrologers & advanced astrology students - please chime in on the community thread! I'd love to know how you're thinking about this.)

Ahh, the age-old question: which astrology house system should I use?

As someone whose chart placements are almost 100% different between Whole Sign & Placidus, this is something I’ve personally explored in depth :) In fact, I started my astrology journey with Placidus, and ultimately moved over to Whole Sign because as I evolved, it became the system that felt truer to me.

This could be a whole class - but I’ll give you a quick technical overview of each system below, as well as my perspective on picking “the right one”.

Here’s the deal:

Whole Sign is the “OG” house system, from a Western astrology perspective.

This is what the ancient Greeks used.

It’s simple (which is why it’s great for beginners), and I (personally) find it to be more archetypal simply because in Whole Sign, every house (i.e. life area) is the same size and contains ONE zodiac sign. That sign has a planetary ruler (and, according to the Greeks, rulers are the visible planets only - not outer ones like Uranus, Neptune or Pluto).

It also uses certain timing techniques - like profections - that just don’t “work” with other house systems.

Placidus is a more “modern” house system.

It was popularized in the 1600’s by a monk named Placidus de Titi.

It uses what’s called a “time-based” system that basically gives each house a different size (and thus importance). Houses can be really big - in which they can contain 2 (or more) signs - or really small (in which case you could end up with 3+ houses that all contain the same zodiac sign!).

Some people find Placidus to be more personal & nuanced because charts look more different with this system. But, it’s also not very useful for extreme North / South latitudes (because you could end up with your chart being entirely 6th/12th house, for example, containing 6 different zodiac signs).

There are other house systems too, like Porphyry, or Vedic. All have a different flavor, and some (like Vedic) even have a totally different approach to astrology.

So…with all of these house systems…how do we choose?

I wish there was an easy answer. But most astrologers agree...there’s no one “right” house system.

  • There are medical astrologers who start with Placidus first, then reference Whole Sign (in the same reading!).
  • Then there are Hellenistic astrologers who use Whole Sign exclusively.
  • Or evolutionary astrologers who prefer Placidus because it’s better at showing the soul’s journey & evolution through a particular area of life (e.g you can start with the cusp sign, evolve through & activate the interception, and culminate with a partially contained sign).

Here’s my personal perspective:

Start with one, explore them all.

I believe astrology is useful mostly because it tells us a story about who we are. That story evolves over our life, as the result of our experiences and our choices.

And sometimes, we get “stuck” in ruts around our stories - either due to our life experience (e.g. trauma can do that), or due to over-focusing on a particular societal narrative, or “what my chart says”.

  • If the story frees you? And evolves you? That’s good.

  • If it helps you make sense of your current life experience? And co-create with it more effectively? That’s also good.

  • If the story starts to feel contracting, or like you’ve outgrown it, or like it doesn’t quite land…maybe it’s time to explore a new house system.

  • Or, if you’re ready for an up level, and you want to simply see more possibilities for what you (and your life) might be like…it can be GREAT to explore another house system!

Sometimes, what we see in our charts won’t quite land.

That could be because you’re not fully embodying it yet. Or, it could simply be that another “system of self” might resonate more. Both are ok.

To me, astrology is an invitation to explore.

Who you are. What you’re here for. What you want to DO in this life. And how you’re going to take action to do it.

So which house system should you use?

I’d say go with the one that feels true for you right now.

And if you come to a place where you want something fresh - like a new perspective - explore another house system.

There’s no rush. People spend lifetimes studying this stuff (not to mention figuring out who they are).

Sorry the answer isn’t more simple :) It’s like when you ask a question and someone says “it depends”. Gah. But in this case, it truly does (it depends on you).

What house system should I use for my birth chart?

Star Path lets you use either a Whole Sign or Placidus house system - and you should pick the one that resonates most with your life experience. Here are some details to help you choose: Whole Sign is the oldest house system (used by the ancient Greeks). It treats all life areas equally, and gives each a single zodiac sign. For that reason, some people find that it captures the soul's journey in a deeper, more archetypal way. That's why it's our personal favorite at Star Path. Placidus is a "modern" house system (invented in the 1600's). It uses different-sized, time-based houses that contain 1, 2 or more signs. Some people find it to be more accurate, especially for "mundane" matters like planning, because individual charts have more variance (and the interpretation has more layers). The truth is, there's no right or wrong house system when it comes to astrology; there's only the system that feels most true for you. Start with one, explore another, and with time, you might even use both for different aspects of life. In our experience, Whole Sign can be more beginner-friendly, so it's a great starting point if you're new too astrology. But why not try them all?

What's the difference between Whole Sign & Placidus?

There are many house systems in astrology - and each is good at different things. Whole Sign (the OG house system) uses equal house sizes - and gives each a single zodiac sign. Placidus (a "modern" house system from the 1600's) defines house size based on time - giving them different sizes, and potentially multiple zodiac signs. In some ways, Whole Sign is simpler because it lacks interceptions (i.e. signs that are sandwiched in between two other signs, all in a single house), and gives each life area a single guiding theme. But this can also make it a very powerful system when exploring the deepest yearnings of a soul in this lifetime - the core needs & experiences we're here eto have. Placidus, in contrast, has more complex, layered interpretations. In the view of evolutionary astrologers, having multiple signs in a single house can show us how a life area "evolves" over time. This can be useful as we move through life, and step into new versions of who we are (especially with regard to themes like money, or love, or career). The beauty is: you can use Whole Sign & Placidus together. In fact, the Star Path team believes this is the best way to explore personal growth - because switching systems takes us out of a "story", or echo chamber, and invites us to look at ourselves from multiple perspectives. You might find that Whole Sign resonates most with you during one season of life, and Placidus feels "right" 10 years later. Or, you might prefer planning with Placidus, but personal growth with Whole Sign. Our recommendation: explore both. See what lands, leave what doesn't. And remember...astrology is just a tool for evolution (you're still in charge).

What’s the best way to use this software if I want to eventually become an astrologer myself?

Step one of an astrology journey is to understand yourself. Truly, understanding how different placements, aspects, and transits show up in your own life will give you the most embodied knowledge of how astrology "works". Once you get it for yourself, it's easier to apply it for others (which you can do by chatting with Star Path about people you add to Your Circle). That being said, we also offer Astrology 101 classes as part of our Pro+ plan - so if you want to start a formal learning process, that's a great place to begin.

How many messages can I send with each plan?

Star Path doesn't actually have limits on a specific number of messages; instead, we have limits on how much actual AI energy is being used (and they re-set on a rolling 5-hour basis). As a rule of thumb, our Max plan gets you 4x the AI usage of Pro. In the AI world, energy \= tokens \- and tokens depend on a few things: length of the message you're sending, what LLM you're using behind the scenes (some are more energy intensive than others), and how much "memory" is being pulled into that message. So, if you paste a transcript into Star Path, even though it's one "message", it might have a lot of tokens. Interesting, the \#1 driver of energy use is actually memory\! When people starting hitting message limits frequently (or quickly), it's almost always because they've been chatting with a single, super long thread \- and so there's a massive amount of memory that gets pulled into each subsequent message. When you hit message limits, you can do a few things: * **Upgrade to the next plan level** to continue chatting immediately. Or, * **Wait a few hours, then come back** to continue chatting. Usage limits operate on a 5-hour rolling basis, so they'll open up again later that day. The good news is, there are 2 simple ways to decrease your energy use & boost your message limit: \#1 \- **Start a new chat**, rather than chatting with a really long one. Here's a pro tip: to optimize your usage limits, start fresh chats frequently. Long chats \= more memory \= higher AI usage. If you start fresh ones, you will dramatically cut down on how much Oracle energy you're using. \#2 \- **Create a Digital Altar.** If you have certain key pieces of info you need Star Path to remember (but you want to avoid using a single long chat), you can curate the memory of a specific folder. This is actually the best way to optimize Star Path, both from a energy use perspective and the quality of the results you'll get. Super long chats create a lot of what we call "junk memory", but when you create a Digital Altar, you can add only what's important (plus custom instructions), then start fresh chats in that folder that share your pinned memory. [Watch this tutorial on how to set up a Digital Altar](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ib6VBMisOQI) My recommendation is to try out \#1 and \#2. I think you'll be amazed by how many more messages you can send when you simply start new chats, and leverage a Digital Altar.
